Description
Belfast Zoo is the main zoological park in Northern Ireland and one of the most visited attractions in the region. It is located on the northern slopes of Cave Hill in north Belfast, offering panoramic views over the city and Belfast Lough. Opened in 1934, it is set within a large hillside parkland and functions as both a conservation centre and a major public green space.
The zoo, known as Belfast Zoo, is home to over 120 species and hundreds of animals from around the world. Its collection includes elephants, lions, tigers, giraffes, bears, orangutans, and a wide range of primates, birds, and reptiles. The layout is spread across steep, natural terrain, with winding paths that take visitors through different themed zones such as the African plains, rainforest habitats, and tropical houses.
What makes Belfast Zoo particularly notable is its strong focus on conservation, education, and its dramatic hillside setting. It participates in international breeding programs for endangered species and offers educational talks, feeding sessions, and guided experiences. Combined with its elevated location and views over Belfast, it provides both a wildlife experience and a scenic outdoor walk, making it one of the city’s key family attractions.
