Besakih Great Temple is the largest and most important Hindu temple complex in Bali, located high on the slopes of Mount Agung in eastern Indonesia. Often referred to as the “Mother Temple of Bali,” it is a central spiritual site for Balinese Hinduism and has been a place of worship for over a thousand years.

The complex is made up of more than 80 individual temples arranged across multiple terraces that climb the mountainside. Its layout follows the natural contours of the volcano, with stone stairways, courtyards, and gateways connecting different shrine areas. The dramatic backdrop of Mount Agung, the island’s most sacred volcano, enhances the temple’s spiritual significance and creates a powerful visual setting, especially when clouds drift across the upper slopes.

Today, Besakih Temple remains an active religious center where major ceremonies and pilgrimages take place throughout the year. While it is open to visitors, many of its inner sanctums are reserved for worshippers. The site offers a deep insight into Balinese Hindu traditions, combining sacred architecture, ritual practice, and one of the most striking natural landscapes in Bali.
