Dendy Cinemas Opera Quays was a much-loved independent cinema situated in Sydney’s Circular Quay, right next to the Opera House and overlooking the harbour. Originally opened in 1999, it quickly became one of Dendy's flagship locations, following the brand's earlier success in Newtown. Known for its art-house programming as well as select mainstream titles, the cinema offered a boutique experience with just a few screens, all set within a striking modern building nicknamed "the toaster" for its distinctive architecture.

The cinema gained a strong reputation not only for its stunning views but also for its role in Sydney’s cultural scene. It hosted many special events, including screenings for the Sydney Film Festival and the prestigious Dendy Awards for Australian short films. For over two decades, it served as a key venue for film enthusiasts who sought a more intimate and curated movie-going experience, quite different from the standard multiplex. However, in early 2020, Dendy announced it would not be renewing its lease, and the cinema officially closed in February that year.

Immediately following Dendy's exit, the space was taken over by United Cinemas, which rebranded the venue as United Cinemas Opera Quays. The new operators expanded and refurbished the facility, adding additional screens and upgrading the amenities to create a more luxurious viewing environment. Despite the change in ownership, the cinema has maintained its appeal as a premium location for film lovers in the heart of Sydney, offering a mix of independent, international, and commercial releases—all in a uniquely scenic setting.
