Description
Diagoras Municipal Stadium of Rhodes is the main multi-use stadium in Rhodes Town, Greece, serving as one of the island’s most important sports venues. Built in 1932 during the Italian administration of the Dodecanese, it was originally named “Arena del Sole” and was designed by architect Armando Bernabiti. Today, it is owned by the Municipality of Rhodes and remains a central hub for local sport.
The stadium is primarily used for football and cycling, and it hosts matches for local clubs such as Diagoras F.C. and AS Rodos. It has a seating capacity of around 3,600–8,500 depending on configuration and renovations, and includes facilities such as a natural grass pitch, training areas, and a cycling track around the field. The wider complex also includes auxiliary training grounds and open spaces used for basketball and volleyball activities.
What makes Diagoras Municipal Stadium especially notable is its combination of historic architecture and everyday sporting use. Its original 1930s Italian design and long history give it cultural significance, while its continued use for football, athletics, and community sport makes it an active part of Rhodes’ sporting life today. It sits close to the city centre, making it easily accessible and deeply connected to the island’s identity and local sports culture.
