Description
KK Split is one of the most historic and successful basketball clubs in Croatia, based in the coastal city of Split. Founded in 1945 as part of the Hajduk sports society’s basketball section, the club became independent in 1948 and adopted the name KK Split in 1949. Over time, it became one of the dominant forces in Yugoslav and European basketball, especially during its legendary era in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The club is best known for its incredible European success under sponsorship names like Jugoplastika and POP 84, when it won three consecutive EuroLeague titles in 1989, 1990, and 1991. This legendary team featured stars such as Toni Kukoč, Dino Rađa, Žan Tabak, and others, and is widely considered one of the greatest dynasties in European basketball history. KK Split also collected multiple domestic Yugoslav championships and cups during this golden period.
What makes KK Split especially notable is its legacy as a symbol of basketball excellence in the Balkans and its deep connection to the sporting identity of Split. Although the club has not consistently matched its historic dominance in modern times, it remains a respected institution with a proud tradition, strong youth development, and one of the most iconic histories in European club basketball.
