Description

Kocatepe Mosque (Kocatepe Camii) is located in the Kızılay district of central Ankara, one of the city’s busiest and most modern areas. Completed in 1987, it is the largest mosque in Ankara and an important landmark, visible from many parts of the city thanks to its four tall minarets and grand central dome. The mosque is an indoor place of worship, designed in a classical Ottoman style inspired by Istanbul mosques, with a vast prayer hall, high ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate calligraphy. Despite its size, the interior feels calm and spacious, offering a strong contrast to the lively streets surrounding it.

Entrance to Kocatepe Mosque is free, as it is an active religious site. It is open every day from early morning until late evening, but access is restricted during the five daily prayer times, particularly on Friday midday prayers, when the mosque fills with worshippers. Outside prayer times, visitors are welcome to enter, look around quietly, and admire the architecture. There is no ticketing system or official visiting schedule, and visits are usually self-guided. The mosque complex also includes lower-level spaces such as meeting rooms and shops, though these are mainly used by locals.

Visitors should dress modestly: shoulders and legs covered, shoes removed before entering, and women should cover their hair (scarves are often provided at the entrance). Photography is generally allowed outside prayer times, but discretion and silence are expected. The mosque can be visited year-round, with no seasonal restrictions, and it is easily accessible by public transport and on foot from Kızılay Square. Because of its size, the mosque rarely feels overcrowded outside prayer hours, making mid-morning or mid-afternoon ideal times for a relaxed visit.
