Dom Luís I Bridge is a historic double-deck metal arch bridge spanning the River Douro between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in northern Portugal. Completed in 1886, it was designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel and quickly became one of the most iconic engineering landmarks in the city.

The bridge features two distinct levels: the upper deck carries a metro line and pedestrian walkway, offering sweeping views over the river, the colourful Ribeira district, and the famous port wine cellars across the water. The lower deck is used for road traffic and local movement between the two riverbanks. Its elegant ironwork arch and open lattice design make it a striking example of 19th-century industrial engineering.

Today, Dom Luís I Bridge is one of Porto’s most photographed landmarks and a key crossing point over the Douro. Visitors often walk across the upper level to enjoy panoramic sunset views of the city, making it both a functional transport link and a defining symbol of Porto’s riverside skyline.
