St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of Sofia’s most famous landmarks and a highlight for many visitors to Bulgaria. It is located in the city centre on St. Alexander Nevsky Square, close to the Bulgarian Parliament and the Church of St. Sofia, and is easy to reach on foot or by public transport. Built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in an impressive Neo-Byzantine style, the cathedral was erected to honour the soldiers who helped liberate Bulgaria. Its massive scale, golden domes, and richly decorated exterior make it one of the most photographed buildings in the city.

The cathedral is mainly an indoor attraction, although the exterior and surrounding square are also worth exploring. Beneath the cathedral is the crypt and Icon Museum, which displays a large collection of Orthodox icons and usually requires a small entrance fee. Religious services take place regularly, especially on weekends and Orthodox holidays, during which sightseeing is limited and visitors are expected to remain quiet and respectful.

St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is open year-round, making it suitable for visits in all seasons, though it is especially pleasant in spring and summer when the surrounding square is lively. Modest dress is recommended (covered shoulders and knees), and photography inside may be restricted or limited to non-flash use. Peak visiting times are late morning and weekends, so early mornings or late afternoons are best for a calmer experience. As one of Sofia’s most important religious sites, it remains an active place of worship, so visitors should be mindful of local customs and schedules when planning their visit.
