Description
The Russian Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is located in central Sofia on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, close to many of the city’s major landmarks. Built between 1907 and 1914, it is an active Orthodox church designed in the Russian Revival style, easily recognized by its five gilded domes and richly decorated exterior. The church is fully indoors, featuring colourful icons, murals, and ornate details. A key draw for visitors is the crypt of Archbishop Seraphim Sobolev, where many people come to leave prayer notes, making the church both a sightseeing stop and a place of pilgrimage.
Entry to the church is free, though small donations and candle purchases are welcome. It is generally open daily, typically from morning until early evening (approximately 8:00–18:00), but hours may change on religious holidays or during services. Since it is a functioning place of worship, visitors should dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees, speak quietly, and be mindful during prayers. Photography inside may be restricted, especially during services, and access to the crypt can be limited or briefly closed at times.
Thanks to its central location, the church is easy to visit on foot or by public transport and fits well into a day of exploring Sofia’s historic centre. It can be visited year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for sightseeing. To avoid crowds and experience a calmer atmosphere, weekday mornings or late afternoons are usually best. Visitors should allow 15–30 minutes for a respectful visit, longer if attending a service or spending time in prayer.
