Description
Zoo Bratislava is the main zoological garden of Slovakia and one of the largest green recreational areas in the capital. It is located in the Mlynská dolina valley in the borough of Karlova Ves in Bratislava, at the foothills of the Little Carpathians. Opened in 1960, it has grown into a major urban nature attraction combining animal exhibits, conservation work, and outdoor recreation.
The zoo, known as Zoo Bratislava, spans about 96 hectares and is home to over 1,000 animals representing nearly 200 species. Its collection includes a wide range of mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish, such as lions, giraffes, elephants, white rhinos, wolves, orangutans, and European bison. The layout is spread across forested and hilly terrain, with walking paths that pass through naturalistic enclosures and themed habitats.
What makes Zoo Bratislava particularly important is its role in conservation, education, and urban recreation. It participates in international breeding programs for endangered species and focuses on animal welfare and environmental awareness. At the same time, it serves as a large public green space where visitors can walk through forested landscapes and observe wildlife, making it one of the most visited attractions in the city.
